WMC’s 15th season celebrates the contributions of living composers of color, continues a holiday tradition with works from America and Europe, and features the 110th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s monumental All-Night Vigil.
I, Too, Sing AmericaOctober 20, 2024 | 3 pm
The season begins with the return of I, Too, Sing America, a concert featuring music from across the United States that celebrates the contributions of composers of color to the choral music canon. This year’s program will showcase the music of Shavon Lloyd, the most recent winner of WMC’s Florence Price Commission Competition. Lloyd is a rising star in the choral world, recently graduating from The Juilliard School. Tell Me, his much-anticipated WMC commission, will premiere at the concert. The piece is indicative of the Harlem Renaissance poet Jean Toomer and explores the dichotomous pull Black Americans often feel between the yearning to be accepted while staying true to their unique identity. The program will also include beautiful works by living composers Zanaida Robles, Adolphus Hailstork, and Marques L.A. Garrett, among others.
The All-Night Vigil at 110March 16, 2025 | 5 pm
To conclude our 15th season, Washington Master Chorale will present Sergei Rachmaninoff’s monumental All-Night Vigil, Op. 37, in honor of the 110th anniversary of its premiere. Beloved by Rachmaninoff as one of his favorite works and considered by many to be his finest achievement, the composition will be performed live by Washington Master Chorale for the first time in a decade. The Chorale has a rich history with the piece, having participated in a landmark 2017 album hailed by BBC Music Magazine as 'one of the best recordings' of the opus. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear WMC bring this enduring a cappella masterpiece to life.
