Take away the organ. Take away the orchestra. What remains is the oldest sound there is.
This year’s Christmas program is entirely unaccompanied, moving from an anonymous medieval Puer Natus to new work by Mason Bynes and Christopher Hoh, from Holst’s Nunc Dimittis to Ešenvalds’s Stars, sung over tuned glasses and Tibetan singing bowls.
William Dawson’s Behold the Star and the carols you have known your whole life bring it home, and Silent Night closes the evening. Two performances, in two of Washington’s most beautiful sanctuaries.
