I, TOO, SING AMERICA |
OCTOBER 20 |
The season begins with the return of I, Too, Sing America, a concert featuring music from across the United States that celebrates the contributions of composers of color to the choral music canon. This year’s program will showcase the music of Shavon Lloyd, the most recent winner of WMC’s Florence Price Commission Competition. Lloyd is a rising star in the choral world, recently graduating from The Juilliard School. Tell Me, his much-anticipated WMC commission, will premiere at the concert. The piece is indicative of the Harlem Renaissance poet Jean Toomer and explores the dichotomous pull Black Americans often feel between the yearning to be accepted while staying true to their unique identity. The program will also include beautiful works by living composers Zanaida Robles, Adolphus Hailstork, and Marques L.A. Garrett, among others.
“This concert is for everyone, from veteran choral-goers to newcomers. I especially encourage fans of the Classics to come and experience what today’s composers are contributing to the art form. Tradition is beautiful, but it also lays the foundation for innovation and progression. Without both, music can quickly become stagnant.” - Shavon Lloyd, Featured, Award-Winning Composer |
