SWEET WAS THE SONG

DECEMBER 10


On December 10th, WMC will perform their treasured holiday tradition of seasonal choral music with Sweet was the Song at 3pm at St Ann’s Catholic Church (4001 Yuma St., NW). This concert will feature rarely heard old English and American carols, along with holiday favorites and audience caroling with organ, trumpets, and timpani. In addition, Sweet was the Song will mark the Washington premiere of Japanese American composer Riley Ferretti’s stunning new work Dona Nobis Pacem.

Robert Bonner is currently a trumpeter/cornetist in a premiere military band in Washington, D.C. which regularly performs at the White House, and on national concert tours across the country. Since 2019, Robert has been a founding member of The Dominion Brass Quartet. He has performed with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Barclay Brass and Domino Brass Quartet. Robert was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and the National Orchestral Institute.
Robert Bonner’s notable teachers include Justin Bartels and Ray Mase.

Sam Carullo is a percussion performer and educator based in Baltimore, Maryland. He has performed in various solo, chamber, and orchestral settings, including a performance of Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto with the Belmont University Symphony Orchestra.
As a contemporary percussionist and advocate of the creation and performance of new music, Sam is actively commissioning and working with composers to create new works for percussion; most recently commissioning a new work for solo percussion by composer Lila Meretzky. Sam is also a founding member of the Baltimore Pierrot Ensemble, a chamber ensemble dedicated to the performance of new music from Baltimore area composers. Sam has been recognized multiple times as a recital competition winner, concerto competition winner, as well as the grand prize winner of the Great Plains International Marimba Competition – Duo Division in 2019.
As an avid educator, Sam has worked with students of all levels, ranging from beginners to collegiate level musicians. Sam also pulls from his experience as a member of the Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps and the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps in his work as a marching band instructor and clinician.
Sam is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he studies under marimba virtuoso and percussion pedagogue Robert van Sice. He holds his Bachelor’s degree from Belmont University, where he studied with Dr. Christopher Norton, and his Master’s degree from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, studying under Robert van Sice.

Riley Ferretti is a Japanese-American composer and vocalist whose music explores the idea of human connection through choral, instrumental, and electronic music. Her inspiration spans numerous sources, from poetry to nature to personal experiences. She recently graduated from the University Of Louisville with a B.M. in Music Composition, where she won the 2021-2022 KMEA Collegiate Composition Competition for her choral piece, The Oak, and received the Sixty-Second Annual Alumni Award. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Music Composition at the University of Florida, where she is concentrating on the connection between the voice and live electronics as well as the creation of unique textures in instrumental and vocal music.

Hailed by The Baltimore Sun as a “rising organ star,” Jordan Prescott has established himself as one of the leading organists, conductors, and scholars of his generation. As a solo recitalist, Jordan performs extensively across the United States including appearances at St. Phillip's Cathedral (Atlanta), West Point Military Academy Cadet Chapel, Princeton University Chapel, Washington National Cathedral (Washington, D.C.), Grace Cathedral (San Francisco), St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (New York City). As an ensemble musician, Jordan has appeared under the batons of Marin Alsop, Nicolas McGegan, and Joseph Young. Jordan earned first prize in the 16th International Organ Competition at West Chester University and was named one of Diapason magazine’s ’20 Under 30’ in 2019. Jordan’s research has been published in The American Organist and Tracker magazines and he regularly presents conference workshops, guest lectures, and masterclasses.
Jordan holds the Master of Music in Organ Performance cum laude from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance at Peabody Conservatory where he holds the coveted Dean’s Fellowship. Jordan’s teachers have included John Walker, Andrew Scanlon, and Christopher Jacobson. Additionally, he has studied in Paris with Marie Louise Langlais. Jordan is a member of the keyboard faculty at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County. He currently serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Grace and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in downtown Baltimore having formerly served Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Baltimore and Duke University Chapel in Durham, NC.
​An active member of the American Guild of Organists, Jordan holds the organization’s Associateship diploma. He is an avid distance runner and a finisher of the Baltimore Marathon.

Rob Singer received his Bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan and his Master's degree at Northwestern University.  He has performed with the National, Baltimore, and Atlanta Symphony orchestras, among others.  He is an active teacher and clinician, and enjoys swimming, biking, and running.  Rob is a member of the US Marine Band.
